Suz has always had a passion for combining a variety of different textures and materials that are sensual to the touch. In her works on paper that have been collected from all over the world, the figurative interacts with the abstract. She adopts an organic approach which finds expression, not only in her style of drawing, but also in her use of colour. It is precisely this confrontation of line, colour and paper that allows her work to project a sense of freedom. Using mixed-media, Suz visualises the reality of the woman's form in a fresh perspective. The sensitively drawn lines describe femininity, sensuality and an intimate sense of the self. The abstract and the figurative are synthesised and reflect a post-modern concern with both fragmentation and unity.Suz Hartman studied 'visual communication' at Bath Academy of Art and then moved to Basel, Switzerland where she studied at postgraduate level under Professor Amin Hoffmann. She spent a great deal of time abroad and, on returning to the UK, joined the Royal College of Art Drawing and Painting Studio. She now teaches and is a full-time artist. Of Central European parents, born in England, Suz understands the meaning of hybridity and mixing of culture. This background has contributed to a sensitive approach and emotional freedom in her work.
